Public Forum: “Mekong on More Minds: The Geopolitics and Geoeconomics of Mainland Southeast Asia”

The Japan Foundation, Bangkok in collaboration with Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS), Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, will co-organize a Public Forum on “Mekong on More Minds: The Geopolitics and Geoeconomics of Mainland Southeast Asia”, on Thursday, 28th November 2019 from 09.30 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. (registration starts from 09.00 a.m.) The venue is Room 105 Maha Chulalongkorn Building, Chulalongkorn University.

This year marks the tenth anniversary since Japan and the Mekong region countries comprising of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, situated in the Mainland Southeast Asia, declared 2009 as “Mekong-Japan Exchange Year.” Over the past 10 years of Mekong-Japan cooperation have significantly contributed to the transformation of the Mekong region into a global growth centre. The geopolitical landscape becomes a highlight for Japan to actively implement “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy” by promoting sub-regional connectivity and human resource development projects that links the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean and thus potentially become the hub of future Indo-Pacific economic growth and regional stabilities.

To elaborate this grand strategy into actions, ISIS Thailand and The Japan Foundation (Bangkok) have invited a prominent Japanese scholar and leading scholars and researchers from Thailand and Mekong countries to explore more concrete avenues for cooperation between Japan and mainland Southeast Asian countries, and to discuss the implications of “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy” towards the Mekong region resulting from China’s role in the region, including the Belt and Road Initiative.

For those who are interested in this meeting, please send the confirmation of your participation by registering on-line at QR code on the PR poster. For further information, please contact ISIS staff by telephone at 02.218.7432/3 or e-mail isisthailand@gmail.com
