"Japanese Design Today 100"

The Japan Foundation, in cooperation with Chiang Mai University Art Center, CNX Art Connex, iDesign Magazine, Asahi Super Dry and Siam Discovery proudly present a unique design exhibition from Japan which will represent the finest of Japanese designs from 1990s to the present, in Japanese Design Today 100.

The design of household products reflect the society in which they are created, at the same time the society, its people and its culture also have influences and leave their traces on product designs. Looking at the design of products in everyday life, the viewer might see the life of the society and people who use them with glimpses of their hopes and their dreams.

The items in this exhibition were selected by Hiroshi Kashiwagi, Professor of Musashino Art University; Makoto Koizumi, designer; Nobuko Shimuta, Chief Producer of Nippon Design Center; and Masafumi Fukagawa, Curator of Kawasaki City Museum. The products include furniture, tableware, and electrical appliances to robot, musical instruments and vehicles. All of them are the fine examples of Japanese designs today which show some characteristics that are commonly found in Japanese designs such as skilled, precision craftsmanship, proclivity to make things smaller and thinner, and inventiveness in creating new combinations of form. Nowadays there are also new trends of greater interaction between modernist designs and the traditional Japanese sense of form which can lead to the possibility of greater diversity in the field of design.

If products in everyday life can show the characters of the city and its society, visiting this exhibition may be similar to going on a tour to the contemporary urban life of Japan which may enhance visitors with deeper understanding of Japanese culture as well as its design.
