A Porcelain-like Dance of Delicacy
Setsuko Yamada premieres “Wearing Rose Pink” at Patravadi Theatre
"Yamada's art is a pure dance of detailed movement and form."
- Keisuke Sakurai

Seasoned Japanese dancer/choreographer Setsuko Yamada will grace the intimate stage of Patravadi Theatre’s Studio 1 with the world premiere of her solo work, "Wearing Rose Pink", on 27th and 28th November 2009. A workshop led by the dancer will be conducted on 29th November.

Earning raves as "a dancer who possesses extraordinary delicacy", Setsuko Yamada is one of the leading figures in Japan who create unique and original performances. Her works are well known for the beauty of her subtle movement, tensed forms, and the momentary metamorphoses appear in her dance. Her ability to transform her inner consciousness and memory into movement often communicates a sense of genuineness and a meditative spirituality to the amazed audience.

"Wearing Rose Pink" is a new dance work Setsuko Yamada creates for the Bangkok audience. A dance on the poignancy and elegance of life, "Wearing Rose Pink" is like a dainty piece of china, crafted with inspirations from famous art works like Andrew Wyeth's painting "Christina's World" and Virginia Woolf’s novels "To the Lighthouse" and "The Waves".

Setsuko Yamada studied with the first generation butoh master Akira Kansai at his butoh laboratory, TENSHIKAN, and evolved to develop her own dance style, drawing resources from Japanese breathing techniques, tai chi and the martial arts to create her flowing style of movement. An internationally established dancer and choreographer, her works have been seen in many countries including Japan, South Korea, India, Russia, Romania, Canada and many cities in the Europe.

Apart from the two performances of "Wearing Rose Pink", Setsuko Yamada will also conduct a workshop titled "Finding Bodies" to introduce her working method that based on breathing, unique physical training, dance and improvisation to lead all participants to explore their bodies, themselves and their relationship with the others.

"Wearing Rose Pink" is produced by BIWAKEI and Junko Hanamitsu, in cooperation with The Japan Foundation, Bangkok and Patravadi Theatre. The event is supported by Mekong-Japan Exchange Year 2009.
